CRATER VASES AND TULIPIERES
I first made a couple of these vases when I was taking classes at the fantastic studio “Gasworks” in Brooklyn. One of the owners introduced me to the term “tulipiere” a form of vase that emerged in the Netherlands in the early 1600s when tulips became popular there. Instead of one central opening, tulipieres feature many openings in tiers, each for one tulip.
Most of these vases started as wheel-thrown closed, round forms.
