PHASMID EGGS

When I first saw images of Phasmid eggs by the photographer Levon Biss I thought I was looking at a collection of beautifully crafted ceramic pieces. Instead, I learned that they were macrophotographs of tiny insect eggs (on average about 3mm long)!

Phasmids, also known as walking sticks, stick insects, or ghost insects, live in the tree canopy in subtropical and tropical regions. The Greek term “Phasmid” means “apparition” or “phantom”. Many phasmid species are parthenogenic, meaning they can produce female offspring without fertilization. They are the only insect group with such a wide diversity of egg designs that the species can be identified by the egg alone.
